Dirt Golf began with two people looking for quiet, affordable places to golf. Along the way, we discovered a curious coincidence: many of Saskatchewan's sand green golf courses charged about five dollars for a round, the same amount as a treaty annuity payment.

What started as a search for inexpensive golf quickly became an appreciation for a uniquely Prairie tradition. Scattered across Saskatchewan are community-built courses that have served generations of golfers, sustained through volunteer effort, financial sponsorship contributions, ingenuity, and local pride. 

Dirt Golf is dedicated to documenting, mapping, and celebrating Saskatchewan's sand green golf courses and the communities that keep them alive.

Since launching the project, we have begun documenting Saskatchewan's sand green golf courses one course at a time. To date, we have visited the Borden Golf Club and the Redberry Lake Regional Park Golf Course, photographing the courses, recording their histories, and speaking with local golfers and community members.

What began as a search for affordable and quiet places to golf has evolved into an effort to create a comprehensive directory of Saskatchewan's sand green golf courses. Our goal is to document each course, preserve its history, and highlight the communities that continue to support this uniquely Prairie tradition.

Instead of giving First Nations their land back - Saskatchewan has continued to fund these courses to secure occupancy.
